About Central Department of Microbiology | Tribhuvan University

    Message from Leadership

    Message from HOD

Welcome to Central Department of Microbiology, Tribhuvan University!

With 3 Professors, 5 Associate Professors and 7 Lecturers with PhD and several years of experience, the department is committed to provide quality education and research as per the country’s need. To achieve this, the department has advanced laboratory facilities equipped with state-of-the-art equipment required for cutting-edge research. The thematic research areas include- Infectious diseases, Immunology, Antimicrobial resistance, Tropical diseases, Vector borne diseases (VBDs), Microbial Biotechnology, Molecular biology, Food microbiology and aquatic microbiology. Apart from research and academic activities, the department is also providing technical support to the relevant Government authorities of Nepal, as experts/ advisors, different committee members, and expert group members in agencies like WHO.

Nepal, the lands of Himalayas, has diverse topography (ranging from 70 M above sea level to the top of the world, Mount Everest – 8,848.86 M) and geography (Terai, Hills and Mountains). Different thermophilic and hyper thermophilic bacteria are prevalent in hot springs, while psychrophiles exist in the high-land glaciers of Nepal. Due to this diversity, we have beautiful opportunities for diverse and multi-disciplinary research activities, apart from the challenging issues they bring. Nepal’s microbial diversity also triggers increasing prevalence of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases including different VBDs (Malaria, Dengue, Japanese encephalitis, Chikungunya and Rickettsial diseases) and waterborne disease (Salmonellosis, Hepatitis A/E, Cholera). To address the newer health challenges, we have ever faced, the department is continuously upgraded and updated with the most recent technologies in the laboratory for molecular and immunological investigations. Central department of microbiology is committed to promote research-based education, industrial application, national and international collaboration and will continue to support for evidence-based policy making. At large, we are moving forward to make the department – ‘center of excellence for infectious disease research’. Over the recent years, our commitment to quality research and education has been reflected from our research output and growing international collaboration.

Professor Dr. Binod Lekhak and Head of the Department
