About NEB

The National Examination Board (NEB) is the government body responsible for conducting national-level school examinations in Nepal. Established under the National Examination Board Act of 2017, NEB replaced the former Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB) and the Office of the Controller of Examinations (OCE) for school-level exams.

NEB's Core Responsibilities
NEB administers two critical national examinations:
1. Secondary Education Examination (SEE): Taken by Grade 10 students — Nepal's primary school-leaving examination, with approximately 550,000–600,000 students appearing each year.
2. Grade 11 and 12 Examinations: The higher secondary (+2) level exams in Science, Management, Humanities, and Education streams. See our entrance-exams/neb-grade-12" class="text-blue-600 hover:underline">NEB Grade 12 preparation guide.

Letter Grading System
NEB introduced the letter grading system in 2015, replacing the older percentage-based system for SEE. The grading scale uses a 4.0 GPA system:
- A+ (Outstanding): 3.6–4.0 GPA (90–100%)
- A (Excellent): 3.2–3.6 GPA (80–89%)
- B+ (Very Good): 2.8–3.2 GPA (70–79%)
- B (Good): 2.4–2.8 GPA (60–69%)
- C+ (Satisfactory): 2.0–2.4 GPA (50–59%)
- C (Acceptable): 1.6–2.0 GPA (40–49%)
- D (Partially Acceptable): 1.2–1.6 GPA (30–39%)
- E (Not Acceptable): Below 1.2 GPA (Below 30%)
Students need a minimum D+ (1.6 GPA) to pass each subject. Use our GPA calculator to check your NEB grades.

SEE — The Gateway Examination
SEE is the most significant examination in a Nepali student's school career. Results determine which stream (Science, Management, Humanities, Education) and which +2 colleges a student can apply to. Strong SEE results open doors to competitive +2 programs and eventually to competitive entrance exams for higher education.

After NEB Grade 12
After completing Grade 12, students move to higher education — bachelor's degree programs at various universities. This transition typically requires passing entrance exams. Grade 12 graduates with Science background can pursue engineering, medicine, or pure sciences. Management graduates often pursue BBA, BBS, or BCA. Check programs" class="text-blue-600 hover:underline">available programs to explore options after Grade 12.

Recent Developments
NEB has been modernizing its examination processes:
- Online result publication with marksheet downloads
- OMR-based answer sheet scanning for objective questions
- Standardized question paper formats across the country
- COVID-era provisions for internal assessment-based grading (2020–2021)

Frequently Asked Questions

What replaced SLC in Nepal?

The SLC (School Leaving Certificate) exam was replaced by the SEE (Secondary Education Examination) in 2015. SEE uses a letter grading system instead of the old percentage-based division system. SEE is now administered by the National Examination Board (NEB).

What is the pass mark for SEE in Nepal?

To pass SEE, students need a minimum grade of D+ (equivalent to 1.6 GPA or approximately 35%) in each subject. There is no overall aggregate pass mark — each subject must be individually passed. Students who fail in 1–2 subjects can appear for supplementary exams.

When was NEB established?

NEB was formally established under the National Examination Board Act of 2017 (2073 BS). It consolidated the functions of the Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB), which managed Grade 11-12 exams, and the Office of the Controller of Examinations (OCE), which managed the SLC/SEE.
