Semester System and GPA
KU was a pioneer in adopting the semester-based credit hour system in Nepal. All programs use a 4.0 absolute GPA scale. This system allows for flexible course selection, regular assessments, and faster degree completion compared to annual systems. The grading system guide explains KU's GPA structure in detail.
Entrance Exams and Admission
KU conducts its own entrance examinations for most programs. Research and Innovation
KU leads Nepal's universities in research output. The university has strong international partnerships with universities in Norway, Denmark, South Korea, and Japan. KU's research centers focus on renewable energy, nanotechnology, geomatics, and public health. This research focus makes KU degrees highly valued both domestically and internationally.
Campus Life
KU's main campus in Dhulikhel offers a residential university experience — relatively uncommon in Nepal. The campus provides hostels, sports facilities, a library, and a teaching hospital (Dhulikhel Hospital). The semi-rural setting provides a focused academic environment away from Kathmandu's urban congestion.

Is Kathmandu University public or private?
KU is an autonomous, not-for-profit public institution established by an act of Parliament. While it operates independently and charges higher fees than TU, it is not a private university. The government provides partial funding through UGC grants, and KU generates additional revenue through tuition and research.
What entrance exam is needed for KU?
KU conducts separate entrance exams for each school. KUUMAT is for management programs (BBA/BHM), KUSMAT for engineering, and KUMET for medical programs. Each has its own syllabus, schedule, and admission criteria.
How does KU compare to TU?
KU is smaller, uses the semester system, emphasizes research, and has higher fees. TU is much larger, still partially uses the annual system, and has wider geographic reach. KU generally has better infrastructure and student-teacher ratios, while TU offers more program variety and affordability.
