Nepal Education System — Complete Overview
Understand the full structure of Nepal's education system from pre-primary to higher education, including levels, streams, and credit systems.
About Education System Overview
Nepal's education system follows a structured progression from pre-primary through higher education, governed by the federal framework established under the 2015 Constitution. The system is designed to provide universal basic education while channeling students into specialized academic and vocational tracks at higher levels.
The structure begins with Early Childhood Development (ECD) and pre-primary education for children aged 3–5, followed by Basic Education spanning Grades 1–8. This is compulsory and free in community (public) schools. After Grade 8, students enter Secondary Education (Grades 9–10), which culminates in the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) — Nepal's national-level school leaving examination administered by the National Examination Board (NEB).
After SEE, students move to Higher Secondary Education (Grades 11–12), commonly called "+2" or intermediate level. Here they choose streams: Science, Management, Humanities, or Education. These two years are also administered by NEB. Many colleges across Nepal offer +2 programs — you can colleges" class="text-blue-600 hover:underline">browse colleges to find the right fit.
Higher Education in Nepal begins after Grade 12. Students pursue Bachelor's degrees (typically 3–4 years), followed by Master's degrees (1.5–2 years), and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs. Nepal has 14 universities and several medical academies that grant higher education degrees. Nepal uses two credit systems in higher education. Tribhuvan University (TU) largely follows the annual examination system, while Kathmandu University (KU) and Pokhara University (PU) use the semester-based credit hour system. The move toward semester systems is gradually being adopted across all universities.
