About Grading System

Nepal does not have a single unified grading system. Different examining bodies and universities use different scales, which can be confusing for students, parents, and employers. This guide explains every major grading system currently in use across Nepal.

NEB (National Examination Board) Grading
The National Examination Board uses a letter grading system on a 4.0 GPA scale for both SEE (Grade 10) and Grade 11–12 examinations. The grades range from A+ (4.0 GPA, 90–100%) to E (below 1.6 GPA). A student must score at least a D+ (1.6 GPA, 35%) to pass. The NEB system replaced the old percentage-based division system to reduce unhealthy competition. Use our GPA calculator to check your NEB grades.

Tribhuvan University (TU) Grading
Tribhuvan University, Nepal's oldest and largest university, traditionally uses a percentage-based system with divisions: Distinction (75%+), First Division (60–74%), Second Division (45–59%), and Third Division (35–44%). Some newer TU programs under the semester system use a 4.0 GPA scale. To convert your TU percentage to GPA, use our percentage-to-GPA converter.

Kathmandu University (KU) Grading
Kathmandu University uses a 4.0 absolute GPA scale across all programs. Grades range from A (4.0, 90–100%) to F (0.0, below 40%). KU calculates both semester GPA and cumulative GPA (CGPA). You can compute your CGPA using our CGPA calculator.

Pokhara University (PU) Grading
Pokhara University also follows a 4.0 GPA scale similar to KU. PU uses letter grades: A (4.0), A- (3.7), B+ (3.3), down to F (0.0). Internal assessments typically contribute 40% and finals 60% of the total grade.

CTEVT Grading
CTEVT (Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training) uses a percentage-based system with divisions similar to the old TU system: Distinction (75%+), First Division (60–74%), Second Division (45–59%), and Pass (35–44%). Some newer CTEVT diploma programs are transitioning to GPA-based grading.

Converting Between Systems
Since different institutions use different scales, students often need to convert their grades when applying for further studies or jobs. As a general reference: a 3.6 GPA ≈ 80% ≈ Distinction. However, exact conversion varies by institution. Our percentage-to-GPA tool provides approximate conversions widely accepted in Nepal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA do I need to pass NEB exams?

To pass NEB exams (SEE and Grade 11–12), you need a minimum GPA of 1.6 (Grade D+, equivalent to approximately 35%) in each subject. There is no overall aggregate pass requirement — each subject must be individually passed.

How do I convert TU percentage to GPA?

There is no official formula from TU for percentage-to-GPA conversion, but common approximations are used: 90–100% ≈ 4.0, 80–89% ≈ 3.6, 70–79% ≈ 3.2, 60–69% ≈ 2.8, 50–59% ≈ 2.4, 40–49% ≈ 2.0, below 40% ≈ 0. Use our percentage-to-GPA converter for quick calculations.

Which universities in Nepal use the semester system?

Kathmandu University (KU) and Pokhara University (PU) use the semester system across all programs. Tribhuvan University (TU) has been gradually transitioning some programs to semesters, while many still use the annual system. Purbanchal University also uses a mix of both systems.
