CEE (Common Entrance Examination)

The Common Entrance Examination (CEE) is the single, centralized test that all aspiring medical students in Nepal must pass to gain admission into MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) and BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) programs. The Medical Education Commission (MEC), established under the National Medical Education Act 2075 (2018), conducts CEE to ensure that medical college admissions are merit-based, transparent, and free from institutional bias.

Before the CEE system, individual medical colleges and universities conducted their own separate entrance exams, leading to concerns about inconsistency and corruption. The introduction of CEE by MEC standardized the selection process across all government and private medical colleges in Nepal. All seats in MBBS and BDS programs — including government-funded, institutional, and scholarship seats — are now filled on the basis of CEE merit rankings.

The exam is held annually and covers Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany and Zoology), and English. Students who have completed Grade 12 with Science stream (Biology group) are eligible. The competition is intense, with thousands of applicants vying for limited MBBS seats. Preparation typically requires at least one year of dedicated study beyond the regular +2 curriculum, and many students enroll in specialized coaching programs.

CEE scores and the corresponding merit list are used to allocate seats in government and private medical colleges.
