Tribhuvan University (TU)

Tribhuvan University (TU) is the cornerstone of higher education in Nepal. Founded in 1959 by royal charter, it was the first university to be established in the country and remains the largest by enrollment, with over 400,000 students studying across its network of constituent campuses and more than 1,300 affiliated colleges spread throughout all seven provinces. TU's central administration and academic departments are located in Kirtipur, Kathmandu.

TU follows a faculty-based structure, with major divisions including the Institute of Engineering (glossary/ioe" class="text-blue-600 hover:underline">IOE), the Institute of Medicine, the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, and faculties for Humanities and Social Sciences, Management, Education, and Law. Each faculty sets its own curriculum, conducts entrance exams, and awards degrees. TU uses the annual examination system for most programs, though some faculties have begun adopting semester-based systems.

Despite its scale, TU faces ongoing challenges including infrastructure limitations, curriculum modernization, and quality consistency across affiliated colleges.
