MS General Surgery

Three-year, full-time residency program under Tribhuvan University designed to produce competent general surgeons equipped with the knowledge, clinical skills, operative abilities, and professional judgment required to manage a wide range of surgical conditions safely and independently.
Program integrates basic surgical sciences, clinical rotations, operative training, emergency surgery, trauma care, perioperative management, and research. Structure emphasizes intensive hospital-based learning, ward management, outpatient care, on-call responsibilities, journal clubs, case presentations, seminars, and thesis development. Graduates develop broad competence in surgical decision-making, operative techniques, patient communication, and interdisciplinary coordination, preparing them for independent surgical practice, subspecialty training, or academic roles.

Curricular structure (training structure)

Year-wise Structure

First Year (Basic Sciences + Foundational Surgery)

• Anatomy, physiology, pathology tutorials
• Introduction to surgical wards, OPD duties, and case clerking
• Basic operative assistance and supervised minor procedures
• Emergency room exposure
• Journal clubs, CME sessions, case presentations
• Thesis topic selection at end of year

Second Year (Intermediate Surgical Rotations + Thesis Work)

• Rotations across surgical specialties within valley group hospitals
• Increased responsibility in patient management
• Performance of supervised surgical procedures
• Research work and thesis writing
• Continued OPD, IPD, ER, and on-call duties (minimum twice a week)

Third Year (Advanced Surgery + Final Examinations)

• Senior-level responsibility in surgical wards and OT
• Leading case discussions, assisting juniors
• Defending thesis in first half of the year
• Preparation for final MS practical, theory, and oral exams
• OSCE-based evaluation emphasis

Eligibility

• MBBS or equivalent from a recognized institution
• Registered with Nepal Medical Council
• Foreign candidates must hold registration in their home country’s medical council
• One year experience required (except for MDGP and Basic Medical Sciences)
• Minimum 50% in MECEE-PG entrance exam for eligibility

Entrance examination (MECEE-PG)

• Format: Single best response MCQs
• Number of questions: 200
• Duration: 3 hours (one voluntary toilet break after 1 hour)
• Correct answer: 1 point; no negative marking
