Accreditation

Accreditation in Nepal's higher education context refers to the formal quality certification process administered by the glossary/ugc" class="text-blue-600 hover:underline">University Grants Commission (UGC) Nepal. Through accreditation, UGC evaluates whether a higher education institution meets nationally defined standards for academic quality, physical infrastructure, faculty qualifications, governance, and student support services. Institutions that meet these standards are formally certified as accredited.

Nepal introduced its formal accreditation system for higher education institutions in the early 2010s, gradually building a framework for quality assurance that had been largely absent before. The UGC's Quality Assurance and Accreditation (QAA) process involves a self-evaluation report submitted by the institution, followed by an external peer review by UGC-appointed evaluators. Institutions that pass receive accreditation certificates valid for a defined period, after which re-accreditation is required.

Accreditation matters because it signals institutional credibility to prospective students, employers, and foreign universities. Employers increasingly prefer graduates from accredited institutions, and some international scholarship programs and visa processes require applicants to have studied at accredited colleges.
